Ingredients
  

  • First Layer:
  • – ½ cup unsalted butter
  • – 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • – 1 cup granulated sugar
  • – ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • – ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • – ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • – ⅔ cup milk
  • – 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Second Layer + To Serve:
  • – ¾ cup light brown sugar
  • – ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • – 1 ½ cups hot water

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Place butter in a 9x9-inch baking dish and melt in the oven while it preheats.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda. Add milk and vanilla extract, stirring until smooth.
  • Pour batter evenly over the melted butter in the baking dish. Do not stir.
  • In a separate bowl, mix brown sugar and cocoa powder. Sprinkle evenly over the batter.
  • Carefully pour the hot water over the entire mixture. Again, do not stir.
  • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the top is set and a thick chocolate sauce has formed underneath.
  • Let cool slightly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for a truly indulgent treat.

Notes

– Don’t stir after layering—the magic happens in the oven!
– For extra richness, add a handful of chocolate chips to the batter.
– Best served warm, but leftovers can be reheated in the microwave.
